There are some exciting matchups in the round of 16 League Cup with Liverpool vs Arsenal and Chelsea vs Manchester United being the clear highlights.
Liverpool vs Arsenal
Liverpool will likely field a weakened side as they prioritise the Premier League. However, Arsenal will see this competition as a good chance of getting silverware as well as some much-needed form and could field something close to a best 11. You can get odds of 16/5 if you think Arsenal will advance to the next round. Liverpool will have plenty of fringe players wanting to prove themselves and break into the first team, so don’t count them out either.
Chelsea vs Manchester United
With both managers having a lot to prove, Man Utd and Chelsea will be taking this competition more seriously than in previous years. Since the league is out of reach for both sides, the League Cup is a trophy both managers would like on their CV’s. Chelsea are the more in-form team and are at Stamford Bridge, so they will be expected to edge out Man Utd in a close encounter.
Manchester City vs Southampton
Manchester City will rest a lot of their star players, but such is their strength in depth, they’ll still be heavy favourites at home to Southampton. Southampton suffered a horrific 0-9 home loss to Leicester on Friday, and Manager Ralph Hasenhüttl will see this as an excellent opportunity to put that result behind them. You can get odds of 22/1 if you think Southampton will bounce back against the current holders.
Everton vs Watford
Everton host Watford in a battle of two out of form teams. A victory for Everton may keep Marco Silva in a job whilst returning Watford Manager Quique Sánchez Flores will want a cup run to help bolster his side’s Premier League performances in their fight against the drop.
Aston Villa vs Wolves
Aston Villa are at home to Wolves in what could be another tight match. Wolves have had a mixed start to the season and could rest some players because of their Europa League campaign. Aston Villa have made a good start in their return to the Premier League; if Villa field their best team, they will fancy their chances of making the next round.
Other matches
There will be two guaranteed lower league teams in the next round as Oxford host Sunderland and Crawley take on giant-killers Colchester. These fixtures have already been played in their respective leagues with close wins for Crawley and Oxford; expect both of these matches to be tight with penalties possibly deciding the winner. New Sunderland Manager Phil Parkinson guided Bradford City to the final in 2012/13, can he repeat that incredible feat with the Black Cats? You can get odds of 150/1 if you think the 2014 finalists will do one better and win the League Cup. Leicester have a short trip to Burton and should be expected to win comfortably against the League One outfit.
