The day of reckoning is here as Liverpool play Manchester City in the biggest match of the Premier League so far!
Liverpool
Liverpool are six points ahead of City, and a win here will put more breathing space between the two teams. Former Manchester United striker Robin Van Persie decided the title early in the 2012/13 season against Man City with a late winner, Liverpool will hope that a victory here will be worth more than the three points on offer and demoralise Man City’s season. STS are offering odds of 4/5 for Liverpool to win their first title since 1990. Despite winning so many matches, Liverpool haven’t been putting in any remarkable performances. They snatched a late winner at Aston Villa last week, and a team like Man City won’t let them off the hook so easily if they play like that again.
Manchester City
Going by their sky-high standards, Man City haven’t made a start to the season that they would have liked with two losses already against Norwich and Wolves. They were also behind in their previous match against Southampton until two late goals from Sergio Aguero and Kyle Walker saved them. Man City’s all-time top goalscorer is currently 21/20 to score against Liverpool. City have a mini injury crisis at the moment and their goalkeeper Ederson is an injury doubt after coming off early against Atalanta in the Champions League.
Rivalry and H2H
Last season City got the better of the H2H which ultimately decided the title. Before Liverpool became their equal, the Reds actually managed three wins in a row in the 17/18 season with two coming in the Champions League knockout stages. The last Man City win at Anfield was in 2003; they are at 13/8 to end their 16-year wait. Riyad Mahrez missed a penalty last season at Anfield, almost ending their poor run there.
Match preview
In an almost impossible match to predict, home advantage for Liverpool could sway it for them, especially since Man City have a few injuries. Such is Man City’s strength in depth; they don’t have to worry as much as other teams to find players that can fill an injury void. One thing you can expect is a high-quality football match!
Injury news
Liverpool – Joel Matip
Man City - Leroy Sané, Rodri, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Aymeric Laporte and Ederson.
