Struggling Spurs
Tottenham have been in dreadful form in 2019 and have made a shaky start to the Premier League this season with three losses already and a late equaliser against struggling Watford last week; a far cry from the performances that took them to last season’s Champions League Final. They did record a 5-0 morale-boosting victory in their midweek Champions League match against Red Star Belgrade. Song Heung-Min bagged two goals against Red Star during the week; he is also at 5/2 to score any time against another team in red this weekend. Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping that this result will see an upturn in his side’s fortunes.
Liverpool luck
After a rather flat performance in the draw against arch-rivals Manchester United last week, Liverpool will want to get back to winning ways in the Premier League. They’re still six points ahead of second-placed Manchester City, and a dominant display against Spurs will send a message to the rest of the league that last weekend’s performance was just a blip. Roberto Firmino scored in both league games in this fixture last season; he is currently 11/10 to continue his scoring streak against Spurs. Liverpool put in a workmanlike performance during their midweek Champions League match against Genk with a 1-4 win. A comfortable win was expected, and manager Jürgen Klopp will be happy to see Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain getting a couple of goals after his injury troubles.
Match preview
Liverpool have not lost at Anfield since 2017, and you’d expect them to put in a better performance than last weekend. Tottenham will have to be at their very best to win here, but they are one of the few teams that are capable of ending Liverpool’s excellent unbeaten run. Considering the form of both teams this season, it’s hard to see a Tottenham win here. However, we all know that in football anything can happen.
H2H
Tottenham have a poor record against Liverpool, especially away from home, they last won at Anfield in 2011. Spurs have won just one match in the previous 15 fixtures between the two in all competitions. They did get an impressive 4-1 victory in October 2017; a recreation of that performance will be what the Tottenham fans want. Liverpool have won the last three matches between the two sides, including the most important fixture ever in this H2H matchup; the 2019 Champions League Final. Liverpool won 2-0 in that match, and they are 11/2 to win by the same scoreline.
Injury news
Giovani Lo Celso returned for Tottenham against Red Star, but goalkeeper Hugo Lloris will be out for the rest of 2019 with an elbow injury. Ryan Sessegnon is still injured.
Andy Robertson should be fit, despite hobbling off against Genk in midweek. There will be late fitness tests for Joël Matip and Xherdan Shaqiri, but it’s unlikely that they will start.
