Rugby: 2020 Six Nations Championship Preview

Rugby match

TV: BBC One and ITV1.

Schedule: Saturday 1st February - Saturday 14th March.

The Six Nations is about to begin, and we have previewed each team for the upcoming competition as Wales look to defend their title from last year.

England

A fantastic World Cup campaign in the Autumn, but a disastrous final against South Africa. It will be interesting to see if England have recovered from their poor showing in the final. A commanding performance will go some way to put their World Cup final nightmare to bed. They play France in “Le Crunch” first. England were 9/10 to win at a points handicap of -4.5 against France; now they are at 1/1!

England to win the Six Nations @ 4/5.

France

Les Bleus have a lot of new players in their squad and are expected to play a young team with inexperienced players. Could this be the dawn of a new era for French rugby? They haven’t won the Six Nations since 2010.

They play England first and will want to avoid something similar to last year’s 44-8 thrashing at Twickenham. They will definitely improve on that performance, and it’ll be unwise to overlook their chances of a triumph in Paris.

France to win the Six Nations @ 11/2.

Ireland

A disappointing World Cup campaign after being one of the favourites. Ireland have a new head coach in the form of Andy Farrell. He is a former rugby league player and the father of current England rugby union captain Owen Farrell. Ireland looked flat in 2019 after a brilliant 2018, a year in which they were the number one team and won the Six Nations. Farrell will look to galvanise the side with a home victory over Scotland in their first match.

Ireland to win the Six Nations @ 4/1.

Wales

Wales had a brilliant 2019. They are the defending champions with a Grand Slam to boot. They lost a close heartbreaking match to South Africa in the semi-finals of the Rugby World Cup too. 2020 is a new era for them as head coach Warren Gatland stepped down after 12 years at the helm and Wayne Pivac, another Kiwi, is now in charge. They have the most straightforward match in the Six Nations for week one - a home tie against Italy.

Wales to win the Six Nations @ 11/2.

Scotland

Scotland’s Six Nations campaign is already off to a bad start before a ball has been kicked. There’s unrest in the camp as fly-half Finn Russell left the group without a proper explanation being provided. They played poorly at the World Cup and didn’t make it out of the group stages, losing to Japan and their first opponents at the 2020 Six Nations - Ireland. With Ireland in transition, now is the perfect time to play them and grab their first win on Irish soil in 10 years.

Scotland to win the Six Nations @ 25/1.

Italy

Italy have suffered 22 consecutive defeats in the Six Nations; another whitewash here and fans will question their participation. They are the heavy favourites for the wooden spoon award, and the state of Italian rugby appears to be getting worse after each year. Their young star Matteo Minozzi offers them some hope, and he will be the key for the Italians to snap their Six Nations losing streak.

Italy to win the Six Nations @ 1000/1.
